The Wheelers ran their annual hill climb championship up Woodhouse Hill, near Hinchcliffe Mill, Holmfirth on Wednesday 29th August. Decent weather made for a good evenings lung busting activity and entertainment for the crowd on the hair pin bend half way up the climb. What is it about watching people suffer that attracts the crowds?
One agonising second robbed Holme Valley Wheeler’s Simon Roberts of first place on his welcome return to racing. It took former local rider Chris Sharp paying a flying visit to snatch first place from Simon on a good nights racing. Chris recorded 2mins.26secs to Simon’s 2mins.27secs with Ivan Boyes of the Huddersfield Star Wheelers taking third place with 2mins.43secs. A mixture of local riders from the Wheelers to the Huddersfield Road Club and Star Wheelers tackled the hill which both marks the end of the mid week time trial series and the start of a two month hill climbing season.
The Youth Squad had their own prize to compete for in the Juvenile event. With quite a few riders away on holiday it was left to Max Gartery, Doug Hill, Jack Anderson and Jacob Scott to battle it out amongst the ‘grown ups’. Following a couple of nights specialised training focussing on gear selection and smooth starts, 12 year old Jacob Scott reversed the trend in practice to take first place with 3mins.50secs, followed by Jack Beardsell in 3mins.55secs, Doug Hill 3mins.57secs and Max Gartery 4mins.18secs.
The Youth Squad are now focussing on a season of Hill Climbing with the aim of getting a team into the National Championships at the end of October. In addition, the winter track season will be starting in October, with a new younger Youth Squad now being recruited to follow in the footsteps of the current squad.
