Dinner & Presentation

Richard Hey and Tanya Arnold

Holme Valley Wheelers held their annual club dinner in the Old Bridge Hotel on Saturday evening. We were honoured this year to have Tanya Arnold from Look North as our guest speaker. She kept us entertained with tales of her life as a roving sports commentator. She had recently met Ed Clancy, Olympic gold medal team pursuit winner who originated from the wheelers, and told us about how laid back he still I, despite his almost celebrity status.

Samantha Mannion welcomed Tanya to the Holme Valley as well as other guests who had travelled many miles to be there. After a superb meal Christine Tiffany, club secretary began the awards ceremony with Tanya presenting the numerous medals and trophies to the winners. Notably were the numerous club records that were broke this year – the men’s & women’s 10 mile time trial by Steve Robinson and Rachael Mellor, the women’s 50 and 100 mile time trial by Rachael Mellor and the women’s team 10 mile time trial by Samantha Mannion, Trish Griffin and Rachael Mellor.

The Youth squad once again did themselves proud with Ben Kellet taking the Road Race Champions Shield. Jack Beardsell won the Juvenille 10 mile time trial league and the 10 mile championship for the 3 fastest 10’s on average speed on the Sovereign course. Jacob Scott won the Youth 5 mile time trial championship and Athena Mellor was awarded the Juvenile Lady Champion for the fastest club 10 mile time trial. Ben and Athena were also awarded with their Yorkshire medals for events won earlier in the year making them both Yorkshire champions at different events. The Open 25 mile champion was Richard Hey he also took the 25-mile championship with an average speed of 26.422 mph.

The Sovereign 10 league, which runs every Wednesday evening from May to September, was won by Steve Rimmer, with Samantha Mannion taking the ladies title. The fastest 10 of the season on the Sovereign course was won by Carl Saint for the men, Rachael Mellor for the ladies and Ben Kellet for the Juveniles. The Best All Rounder competition for the Juveniles was won by Ben Kellet with an average speed of 22.5mph for three 10 mile time trials. Rachael Mellor won the Ladies BAR with rides in 10, 25 and 50 miles recording an average speed of 24.7mph, this year she also won the Middle distance championship because due to the bad weather all summer no men rode an 100 miles time trial, Rachael was fortunate to get a good day on her first ever 100 mile race and won the Mal Battye cup for 25, 50 and 100 mile with an average speed of 23.13mph.

The club Hill climb was once again won by Julian Rank. Rachael Mellor gave thanks on behalf of the Prize winners thanking all volunteers throughout the year for their excellent efforts.
The Wheelers continues to grow in numbers and is a Go Ride club with 3 coaches.
