The New Racing Season

Posted: Monday, March 19th, 2012

Club development officer David Williams has plenty of suggestions for great events this year, start planning your season now!

The season is under way now or the road season any way. Riders have been competing in cyclo cross and track leagues through the winter.

The White Rose Youth League will start on the 14th and 28th April with 2 early bird events at the Tockwith motor racing circuit near Wetherby. More information can be found on the White Rose Youth League website http://whiteroseyouthleague.co.uk/index.html

The league proper gets under way on May 9th at Richard Dunn then all being well the new circuit at Forge Valley should be ready for May 16th, this is in the Malinbridge area of Sheffield and should be quite easy to get to from the Holme Valley.

There is a mountain bike race at Dalby Forest on the 21st April.

If you’re interested in riding a stage race the Isle of Man Youth Tour starts 4th May and the North West Youth Tour is the Queens Jubilee weekend at Blackpool Preston and Lancaster. I have heard the children say that the racing is better at the North West Youth Tour because they have two races on some of the days.

The West Riding Grass Track League at Roundhay park starts on May 14th. http://www.cycleroundhay.co.uk/index.cfm?page=1

Keep looking at events on the British Cycling web site there are lots of races to do and if you go way on holiday try a race on different circuits. Race orgainsiers will welcome riders from other parts of the country.

Some other good events:

20th June Otley Town Centre Circuit Races (one of the best races in the country and a great night out for the family!) http://www.otleycycleraces.co.uk/

Brighouse Town Centre Races on the 26th June for A/B youths only.

There are the British Schools (BSCA) races on the 20th May at Matlock and the grass track at Leeds on the 22nd July.  On 10th June there is a 10 mile time trial on the open road so have to be 13 by the 1st September year 9.  More info on the BSCA website http://www.bsca.org.uk/

There are cycling time trials events the GHS 10 on 14th July the Holme Valley Wheelers 10 on the 9th June 26th May Yorkshire cycling federation  10. Riders must be over 12 years old for cycling time trial events. There are no gear restrictions in CTT( cycling time trials) events.

Please do not be tempted to ride on big gears as you could damage your knees later in life. Look at the big picture. It is nice to record fast times put that is all they are and will not impress selectors for talent teams and olympic deveolopment programes.

The Yorkshire Summer Cyclo-cross series starts on 2nd May, these are great events with just 2 age categories under 14 and over 14 and plenty of local races. Unfortunately they do clash with the White Rose League, more info at http://www.yorkshirecyclocross.org.uk/

If you fancy some tri or duathlon then there is Wakefield run bike run on the 29th April and Holmfirth run bike run on at Richard Dunn on the 5th May.

For any more information please call me on 01484 662242 or 07757720921 David Williams.

Don’t forget the mountain bike rides on the first and last Saturday in the months next one the 31st May 10.30  from Wooldale school.
