Juniors in action
Wednesday saw the first White Rose League at Wombwell – second in the series. This circuit varies from Richard Dunn, it is slightly shorter but much more technical with more twists and turns to negotiate. The torrential rain last Wednesday did nothing to help the tricky conditions, bringing some riders off.
Overall once again the performances of the Wheelers were superb. In the U16 boys Oli Futrell improved on his first performance at Richard Dunn by taking 3rd in the time trial and 6th in the road race, giving him 5th overall and 15 points. In the U14 boys Jacob Scott unfortunately came off in the road race due to the conditions but went on to improve his overall standing in the National Closed Circuit Roads series later on in the week (see below).
In the U14 girls Rebecca Addy continues to improve with 5th in the TT and 5th in the road race giving her 5th overall and 4 points. In the same age group Alex France was 6th in the TT and 7th in the road race and Sophie Williams was 8th in the TT and maintained the same position in the road race.
Lewis Byram continues to lead our U12 boys with a very good 2nd in the TT and 4th in the road race giving him 10 points and 4th overall. Close behind, despite his younger years, Joe Williams was 4th in the TT and 5th in the road race, giving him 5th overall and 5 points. On his debut ride Ben Dickinson did well to be placed 6th in the TT and 7th in the road race, with Andrew Farquhar close behind, 7th in the TT and 8th in the road race.
Lucy Farquhar was our only U12 girl at Wombwell and picked up some good points with 2nd in the TT and 2nd in the road race. Younger brother Nicky represented our U10 boys with 9th in the TT and 6th in the road race. Our best results at Wombwell came in the U10 girls with twin sisters Lucy and Erica Byram dominating the girls race. Lucy just beating Erica in the TT and gaining maximum points, with 1st and 2nd placings respectively and the same in the road race, putting Lucy in 1st place on 20 points and Erica in 2nd place on 14 points.
As mentioned early Jacob Scott was unlucky to fall off his bike and get some nasty cuts and bruises at Wombwell on the Wednesday evening, but he was up and back on his bike for another 3 days of racing at the weekend. Jacob was representing Yorkshire in the North West Youth Tour 3 day event which began on Saturday along the promenade in Blackpool. With howling winds blowing off the sea it was a day for the strong riders of which Jacob is one. He was 7th out of 32 riders in the 1 lap time trial in the morning and 5th in the afternoon in the 18 mile road race – Jacob was the victim of the high winds and some ‘litter bug’ as a plastic bag blew into his rear wheel forcing Jacob to stop and remove it! Overall after day one he was placed 6th. On the Sunday all change with the weather, perfect calm and warm conditions for the 12 mile road race where Jacob was placed 3rd. In the afternoon he had to race back the 12 miles he covered in the morning and took 5th position, again giving him 5th overall. On Monday at the Preston Sports Arena Jacob was disappointed to only be placed 8th in the 20 mile road race, after being ‘cut-up’ by another rider. Over the 3 days he gained 5th overall, an excellent result for 3 hard – but rewarding – days of cycling.
For all you budding Junior cyclists Go Ride, run by the Wheelers is now running every Thursday evening at Sands Holmfirth from 7 – 8pm with coaches David Williams and Rachael Mellor. Come along to learn new cycling skills and have fun – cost is £1. Please bring suitable clothing, well maintained bike and a helmet.

Many thanks to the riders, helpers and friends who understood the need to cancel our 25 on Saturday. I know it must be frustrating when we had got a much better day than in previous years. My prime concern was with the riders safety together with the need to close the road to enable the air ambulance to get close so that the injured rider could be dealt with quickly. I have been in touch with June’s family and found that despite a very bad leg injury June was in good spirits and quite well in her self.
Thanks to all who helped. I am sure we all wish her a speedy recovery.

The Wheelers promoted their own open races based around Boroughbridge this weekend. Both the 25 mile time trial and the 50 mile were based around the A168. The weather for the 25 on the Saturday afternoon was not good but due to the good course it had attracted a full field of riders (120 men) plus 12 women and 3 Juniors.
Ben Kellet our up and coming Junior rider was off no. 1 and rode an excellent race to finish well in front of his nearest rival in an amazing time of 56.08 – this demonstrates Bens potential for the future and reflects the hard work and many miles he has put into training.
Disaster struck during the ladies race with an experienced lady being knocked off as she rode along the rode by a driver who was turning right and “did not see her”. It was a bad accident and the air ambulance had to be called. We all wish the lady cyclist the very best in her recovery. This meant the race had to be stopped. Our own Samantha Mannion started before the accident and did finish the race in a good time of 1 hour 7 minutes and 59 seconds.
The 50 on the Sunday was organised by Samantha and the rest of the Wheelers all volunteering as marshalls, time keepers etc. Just 3 Wheelers rode this early season 50, Andrew Kerry recording the fastest time for the Wheelers and a new PB of 2:05:09 followed closely by Rachael Mellor – who also recorded a PB in 2:05:20. 3rd Wheeler home but not on top form due to his recent hard road race schedule, was Richard Binks in 2:09:30. Richard had recently come in 6th in the Percy Stallard National Vets Road Race, 7th in the Glossop hilly TT and an excellent 3rd in the Tour of Abberleys – a 3 day vets race in 4 stages based in the Midlands. He was 4th out of 90 in the prologue, 2nd in Stage 2, 6th in stage 3 and pulled back some placings in the hilly stage 4 giving him 5th and 3rd overall.

Holme Valley Wheelers making their mark around Yorkshire and beyond…The Wheelers have been travelling around Yorkshire, making their mark in a variety of cycling disciplines this weekend.
Ben Kellet travelled to Doncaster to ride the Thurcroft Wheelers 10 mile time trial on the relatively flat but very exposed Hatfield-Woodhouse course. With winds cancelling other events in the county Ben was lucky to ride and in the conditions did a superb personal best, coming in 4th position in a time of 23 minutes and 29 seconds. Ben also won 2nd handicap by improving so much.
In North Yorkshire the 2nd round of the National Mountain Bike Cross Country series was held in Dalby Forest. Over 500 riders from all over the world came to challenge themselves. It was also a test event for bringing the UCI Mountain Bike Cross country World Cup here in 2010. Local Wheeler Oliver Futrell was placed 15th in his race, 2 places higher than in the first round in April at Sherwood Pines. Oliver is still at the bottom of his age group so an excellent performance.
Both Ben and Oliver made their mark in the first 10-mile time trial of the season on the challenging Sovereign course based around Birds Edge. With a great turn out despite windy conditions all the riders were eager to see what they could do on this, one of the hilliest 10-mile courses in the country. Winner was last year’s fastest rider Steve Robinson in a good time of 25:12, but Ben was close behind in a fantastic time of 25:28, over a minute better than he had ridden on this course last year. Oliver was first Junior home in another good time of 26:51, brilliant for a first time over this course. Rachael Mellor led the ladies home by over 2 minutes with a good time for the night of 27:16. Young Jacob Scott spent his Bank Holiday weekend on the Isle of Man competing in the Youth Tour from the 1st to the 3rd of May. The Tour forms part of the National Youth Circuit Race Series. Jacob competes in the Youth B races and on the Friday evening rode the Douglas Promenade Prologue Time Trial coming in an excellent 4th place. Saturday was the Ellerslie Climb Road Race over 28 km, a gruelling 4 laps starting at the bottom of a very steep hill with the finish line at the top! Jacob did a great ride to come in 7th but loosing 6th spot by only 0.02 of a second. Finally on day 3 was the Ramsey Promenade circuit race over 19.2km where Jacob achieved his best result all weekend winning with a brilliant, well-timed sprint for the line, taking 4 seconds out of his nearest rival. Overall Jacob was 6th, an excellent placing and I am sure will only be improved on by this talented young rider.

The C.A.Rhodes Memorial for 2008 is to be made to David Stone MBE and Edward (Ed) Clancy in recognition of their success at the Beijing Olympics in both winning gold medals. The memorial was instigated in 1961 as a tribute to the memory of Charles Arthur Rhodes (1895-1961) doyen of the Yorkshire Road Club, co-founder in 1932 of the Yorkshire Cycling Federation and a nationally recognised timekeeper and administrator. The Award is regarded as the greatest distinction Yorkshire Cycling can bestow. The award will be presented at the Yorkshire Cycling Federation luncheon to be held on the 22nd February 2009.

Training rides
Starting 7pm on Thursday April 2nd training sessions will take place at Farnley Tyas (swing park on Butts Road). This will be in the form of a chain gang ride. This is not a coached ride and riders ride at own risk. Members of other clubs are welcome. If required this will take place every Thursday there after. More details from.
