What a day Monday was for the Holme Valley Wheelers. It all started around 10. 30 am. Look North

Youth Squad at the Velodrome - Friday 4 January

The Youth Squad returned to the National Cycling Centre on Friday 4 January for another two hour session.

Whilst the novice riders learned the art of moving around the steeply banked track and trying to better their previous times for a 250metre standing start lap, the more experienced riders got down to practicing some race skills and tactics and then participating in a flying start 200metre time trial and a points race

The five novice riders, all under 11 years of age, spent their time weaving in and out of cones placed around the track and learned to hold their line around the curves before completing the 250 metre time trial, the results of which were very close:
250 metre time trial
Leon Woodhouse - 30.08 seconds
Jacob Black - 30.22 seconds
Joe Williams - 30.42 seconds
Amira Mellor - 30.88 seconds
Sophie Williams - 32.77 seconds

The more experienced riders (aged between 12 and 15) began to practice the skills needed to perform in track racing where the bikes have no brakes or gears and riders compete shoulder to shoulder. Drills involved the lung bursting exercise of chasing down a group both singularly (for half a lap) and in pairs (for a full lap) before completing a flying start 200m time trial and then competing in a points race.
200metres Flying start
Ben Kellett - 13.57 seconds
Jack Anderson - 14.01 Seconds
Jacob Scott - 14.62 seconds
Max Gartery - 15.09 seconds
Edward Black - 15.59 seconds
Chris Malloy - 16.32 seconds
Athena Mellor - 16.35 seconds
Jack Beardsell - 16.89 seconds
James Kellett - 17.13 seconds
Oliver Taylor - 17.98 seconds

Ben Kellet dominated the points race winning each of the three sprints with Jack Anderson, Edward Balck and Jacob Scott all getting in the points. The final result, though, was beyond doubt:

Ben Kellett - 9 points
Jack Anderson - 5 points
Edward Black - 3 points
Jacob Scott - 1 point

With the majority of the squad now becoming track competent the club is looking to recruit new members to learn exciting skills and get involved in competition. Anyone interested should contact Peter Root 07879 426 064 or peterroot@britishcycling.org.uk

More Velodrome Sessions

We are waiting for scraps in the booking system from January to April 2008 – mainly cancellations. BUT given we have put a rocket into the system we are top of the list and have just been offered Friday 4th January 7-9pm and Sunday 27th 1-3pm which I have provisionally booked.

Both these sessions will allow us to take both squads but we need a minimum of 20 kids to justify the cost at £12 a head.

Please confirm [with Mark Wilcox] ASAP before the deposit is paid.

Velodrome Training

We have been offered an extra slot (due to a cancellation) at Manchester Velodrome on the afternoon of Saturday 27 October. The slot offered is 1pm - 5pm but a 4 hour slot is beyond both riders and coach at the moment!

Peter Root proposes to book the track from 3-5pm so that both beginners and experienced riders can have a go. The cost will be £12 each including bike hire but not including shoes.

There are only 14 riders in the circulation list so there are plenty of spare places. Anyone else who would like to join the club and take part in these sessions please pass on the message.

Please would you let Peter Root know as soon as possible whether you will be attending. As Mark will be away, Peter will sort out the bike sizes later next week.

Any questions please drop him an email or give him a ring on the numbers below.

Velodrome Training

We have been offered a 2 hour slot at the Velodrome on Saturday the 3rd November 1pm – 3pm which I have booked on the basis that we can make the numbers up.

The idea is to use this session to introduce the new squad to the track and get the existing squad back into their winter routine.

Would the parents of potential new members please contact either me [Mark Wilcox] or Peter Root to book a place and provide details for bike size (height will do).

Would the existing squad please confirm your ability to attend.

I will try and organise a ½ talk for the new comers to inform them about the kit and how to ride the track safely.

Regards

Mark Wilcox

Velodrome Sessions

MARK WILCOX has managed to book four sessions at the recently rebuilt Velodrome to start our winter season of track training and racing.

Two of the sessions are 2 hours long – which will allow us to bring a new, young squad into the frame.  Interested parties should contact either Mark or Peter Root. Preferred age group would be 10-12 year old boys and girls.

Both Peter and Mark are fully trained coaches with British Cycling and approved to coach at the Velodrome. They have trained the current youth squad at the Velodrome for the last two years and as they progress the time is right for the next round of recruits to follow on.

We will be looking for some commitment to attend the sessions as once they are booked we have to pay a non-refundable deposit.

The dates are:-

Sunday 7th October  3-5pm  (May clash with Hill Climbs – but we can work round this)

Saturday 10th November 7-8 pm (Mark away at the Coaches conference that weekend so will rely on Peter)

Saturday 1st December 5-6 pm

Saturday 15th December 7-9pm
