RACING NEWS

The Sovereign 10 mile Time Trials are approaching their final month already. It seems in every aspect of life we have not had summer but especially so when you venture up to the Sovereign to ride the 10 course. Inevitably the wind is twice as gusty as further down the valley and the black clouds seem thicker and heavier. Consequently good nights producing good times have been scarce.Last week saw a good turn out with 18 local riders braving the strong breeze but fine weather. Only Steve Robinson rode a ‘fast’ time (24:11) for the sporting course with 2nd placed Steve Rimmer over a minute and a half behind, 25:56. Rachael Mellor was fastest lady in 27:58, Samantha Mannion next in 30:15 and H. Simpson 31:51 - a good ride for her first. Other riders on the night were: - Nigel Dickinson 26:53, Andrew Kerry 27:14, Mick Fothergill 27:23, Gary Terry 27:37, Nick Mannion 28:11, Huw Firth 28:37, Mick Cole 28:38, Greg Parkin 29:14, Gordon Moss and Ian Lindsey both in 29:18, P. Mullins 29:55, G. Laight 30:04, Chris Fisher 37:31. With just five 10 mile TT’s left competition will be hotting up for top spot, still held by Steve Rimmer, with Andrew Kerry moving into second. Samantha Mannion continues to lead the ladies competition.

Most of the regular riders were out early Sunday morning for the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 50 mile Time Trial on the normally fast course from Boroughbridge to Catterick and back. Despite the race starting before 7am the wind was already up and blowing straight into the riders as they headed out for the 25-mile turn around. After the race Rachael Mellor was heard to say she was going so slowly into the headwind that she was considering getting off to make sure her brakes were not locked on! Many riders called it a day as they fought against strong winds. But - as soon as you turned for home speeds jumped up almost 10mph to be cruising back to Boroughbridge with a roaring tail wind easily touching 30mph. Carl Saint (Yorkshire Road Club) still celebrating his recent Championship record easily won the event with a brilliant time for the day of 1 hour 45 mins and 48 seconds. Gary Terry was the fastest Wheeler home with a good time of 2:05:47, just 2 minutes outside his personal best - a good ride for the day. Next rider home was Andrew Kerry, using this ride as part of his training for his Ironman race in September, in a time of 2:10:45. Rachael Mellor was first lady Wheeler home with a time of 2:09:48, with Samantha Mannion coming in 2:22:05. Mick Cole from Huddersfield Road Club had a good ride for the conditions in 2:10:13, excellent for 63 years young!

Holme Valley Wheelers Youth and Junior Squad having a good season

Last weekend saw the Holme Valley Wheelers Youth Squad in action in Round 4 of the Preston youth league. Ben Kellet continued his excellent form to take 7th in the first race and 4th in the second race giving him an overall position of 3rd. This is a great result for Ben in a field of over 35 riders, many of who are already riding for sponsored clubs. Jacob Scott is in his first year as an under 14 and came in a credible 8th and 7th in the 2 races. Jacob is also lying 3rd overall in his age group with over 35 riders regularly taking part. Max Gartery in the same age group came in 17th and 19th giving him an overall position after the 4th Round of 10th. James Kellet, younger brother of Ben, took 14th on the first race and 12th on the second; his overall standing in the U14’s is 20th, with Doug Hill just behind him in 22nd place. With 3 more Rounds to go the competition is hotting up and the Holme Valley boys will be looking forward to moving further up the rankings.

The wet and windy weather seemed to have a 30 minute break at last Wednesdays Sovereign10 mile time trial. Good times were recorded, with Steve Robinson winning with a good 24:49, second was Richard Binks in 24:55 and third Steve Rimmer in 25:16. Samantha Mannion was the only female rider and improved a great deal from her previous week with a 29.08. Other riders were, A. Pearson 26.22; N. Dickenson 26.25; A. Kerry 26:55; N. Mannion 27.33; G. Moss 27.56; Mick Cole 28.14. Steve Rimmer continues to lead the men’s series and Samantha Mannion the ladies series.

Most of the Junior and Youth riders are taking part in the White Rose League at Richard Dunn cycle track and Wombwell cycle track every Wednesday evening. The Farqhuar family of Lucy, Andrew and Nicky are all performing well with Lucy lying 3rd in the U12 girls. Amira Mellor also in the U12 age group is currently in 2nd place as Lucy and Amira continue to vie for placings. Joe Williams consistently performs well in the Under 10 boys and is in 5th position after 4 races. Ben Kellet in the Under 16 boys is presently in 5th regularly racing alongside the boys from the British Cycling Talent Team. In the Under 14 boys Jacob Scott, Max Gartery and James Kellet ride consistently well with all the boys in the top 10 positions after 4 races.
The British Schools Cycling Association Yorkshire Time Trial championship was held on Saturday the 5th of July at the Richard Dunn cycle track. This event was for the Under 8’s, Under 10’s and Under 12 age groups. Holme Valley Wheelers had Amira Mellor in the Under 10 girls, Joe Williams in the under 10 boys and Sophie Williams in the U12 girls. Amira had an excellent race to win her age and be presented with the Regional champion medal. Joe Williams came in an excellent 5th place and Sophie 4th in her age group.

The Holme Valley Youth and Juniors have certainly been busy recently and are all inspired by former Wheeler Ed Clancy who is tipped to be ‘the lead man’ in the Great Britain men’s pursuit team in the Olympic games.
